Wave division multiplexing (wdm) is an optical transport system that divides existing black fibre into numerous traffic channels to convey several streams of data at the same time, similar to expanding the number of lanes on a motorway to improve traffic flow. The 10gbase-lx4 10 gbit/s physical layer standard is an example of a cwdm system in which four wavelengths near 1310 nm are utilised to convey 10 gbit/s of aggregate data, each carrying a 3.125 gbit/s data stream (wavelength division multiplexing example). Wavelength division multiplexing applications includes fibre optics, aircraft application and rf avionics. Advantages of wdm includes it is easier to reconfigure, full duplex transmission is possible, it provides higher bandwidth, optical component are similar and more reliable, high security and this could be the best approach as it is simple to implement. Disadvantages of wdm includes the signals cannot be very close, lightwave carrying while using wdm are limited to 2 point circuit, difficulty in wavelength tuning, inefficiency in bw utilization and difficulty in a cascaded topology ((wavelength division multiplexing advantages and disadvantages). Wavelength division multiplexing in optical fiber enables the use of different light wavelengths (or colours) to transfer data over the same medium. Dense wavelength-division multiplexing (dwdm) is a type of optical fibre multiplexing that is used to expand the bandwidth of existing fibre networks. It combines data signals from many sources via a single pair of optical fibre while keeping the data streams completely separate. Dense wavelength division multiplexing (dwdm) has long been the preferred technology for moving massive amounts of data between locations. The key advantage is that it enhances bandwidth by allowing several data streams to be delivered over a single optical fibre network at the same time.
