Biodiesel is a clean-burning, renewable alternative to petroleum diesel that is produced in the United States. Using biodiesel as a vehicle fuel improves air quality and the environment while also providing safety benefits. Novel enzymes in biofuel production include ribozymes and abzymes. Cellulose degradation enzymes are enzymes that degrade the cellulose found in plant cell walls into simple sugars that can be used to make biofuels as well as many of the biobased chemicals, plastics, and other materials mentioned above. Enzymatic degradation takes place in two stages: enzyme adsorption on the polymer surface, followed by hydro-peroxidation/hydrolysis of the bonds. Microorganisms from various environments, as well as the digestive intestines of some invertebrates, are sources of plastic-degrading enzymes. Microbial and enzymatic degradation of waste petro-plastics is a promising strategy for depolymerization of waste petro-plastics into polymer monomers for recycling, or for mineralization of waste plastics to higher value bioproducts such as biodegradable polymers (Enzyme degradation meaning). Cellulase enzymes are used to break down the cellulose of plant cell walls into simple sugars that microbes can ferment into fuels, primarily ethanol, as well as chemicals, plastics, fibers, detergents, pharmaceuticals, and a variety of other products (Cellulase enzyme function). Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) are electrochemical devices that convert chemical energy into electricity. EBFCs, a type of fuel cell, rely on enzymes as catalysts, governing fuel oxidation at the anode and typical dioxygen (Enzymatic biofuel cell). Types of biofuel cells include microbial fuel cells and enzymatic biofuel cells.
